• • • So, I never wanted to watch this show with the intentions to compare it to the original Sailor Moon. I grew up on Sailor Moon. She and the guardians were my first heroes, they inspired me and gave me a life of magic. I love Sailor Moon.

I do not, however, love Sailor Moon Crystal.

Don't get me wrong. There is a lot to love about Sailor Moon Crystal. And for what it was worth, I did enjoy it. But inevitably, despite trying to keep a clear head and open mind, I ended up comparing Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal...and, to me, the original is better. In this review I will absolutely try not to compare it to the original.

For one, I did enjoy the art style. While I did notice some animation errors—which is what actually looks like the animators just got lazy about as the series went on; it almost appears as if after they made the opening sequence and put all the work into the gorgeous design of that everyone lost interest afterward—I felt like they were trying to apply the new, modern drawing and animation style to the unique art style of Naoko Takeuchi. I really enjoyed that aspect because that meant there was a new but older feel to the art style and it also meant a lot of colorful and bright animation.

However, on the topic of the animation, I did not at all enjoy the transformation of the sailor senshi. It was strange, awkward, and just really unusual. It looks like 3D models of the characters were used during this process and then brought to life. But despite being "brought to life" the 3D versions of the 2D sailor senshi don't look quiet...themselves. They're lifeless and more doll-like than anything, and a lot of emotion and liveliness is lacking in their transformations.

I liked that the plot followed the original manga more so than it did the anime that was created before Crystal. However, I did miss some of the quirks from the original Sailor Moon. I think this is where I really started to compare Crystal to the original anime when I really didn't mean to. I missed some of the fillers that gave the character more background and history and life. It felt like all of that was missing in Sailor Moon Crystal. It felt like we were thrown all these characters with nothing unique or specific about them. Maybe a short introduction to give us a peek into their life, but nothing to really connect to. And that's what I loved about Sailor Moon. They had stories, lives, and families and there was a lot of character development.

As I'm sure everyone knows by now—I love character development. There was very little in Sailor Moon Crystal. Whenever development happened, it's as though the animators forgot that it happened and threw one of the characters back to their former self. This is seen more so with Usagi than any of the other girls, I think. I think even Chibiusa matured more than Usagi in the short time she was in the show than Usagi herself did. Everyone talked about how stronger and more mature Usagi had become, and reveled at her new-found determination. However, although she spoke as though she had those things, all I could see was the crybaby Usagi from the first episode. While in Sailor Moon crybaby Usagi was something to love—because she actually does grow and become stronger, and although she has setbacks she still has a lot of development—crybaby Usagi in Sailor Moon Crystal was something I found to be unbearable and annoying.

As for everyone else and their character development...well, they were strangers. We knew nothing about them, Sailor Moon Crystal took no time to build their stories or expand upon them. They were just plastic, nonexistent characters there to fill up the scene in which they were standing.

The worst part of it all is I really couldn't see Crystal Usagi as the role model I grew up with and learned to adore. The Usagi that I wanted to be like. The Usagi who was strong, brave, and brought people together despite being clumsy and ditzy and crying all the time. Crystal Usagi is overly obsessed with Mamoru and sometimes even forgets that she has friends and not just a soul mate by her side. Maybe a lot of this has to do with the fact that the people behind Crystal didn't even bother to expand upon the other sailor senshi and give them stories or likable qualities to connect to. Whether it does or not, however, doesn't mean that Usagi or even the animators should just throw the other characters on the back burner. Ultimately, that's something that ended up happening.

Due to that fact, although the plot tried to—and did to some extent—follow the manga, a lot of this series just felt like a melodrama. Evil that had to be fought felt similar and repetitive. Crappy love subplots were given to the other senshi, and then never expanded upon. In fact, they were practically thrown out. Whether this is a budget thing, or because the animators just didn't want to focus on anyone that wasn't Usagi, it kind of upset me. I thought during that time that maybe the other senshi would finally get some of the spotlight. If they couldn't have background stories that were to be expanded upon, at least they could have this. But in the end they didn't even get that. And don't even get me started on the Usagi and Mamoru drama—and later the Chibiusa drama—that took place. It was dumb, silly, and painful to watch. I thought a lot of that was bad the first watch with Sailor Moon (I didn't like Chibiusa for quite a while during that series, ha) but this was really terrible to sit through.

I really, really tried to like this series. I did, to an extent. I think really the only thing I actually enjoyed was that it was a reboot and I got to see Sailor Moon in action again. But I really wanted to love Sailor Moon Crystal. I couldn't. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't come to love this Sailor Moon or even this series.

There are rumors of a second series for Sailor Moon Crystal. Honestly, I would just suggest re-watching the 200 episodes of Sailor Moon.

• • • So From Up On Poppy Hill is one of my new top-favorite Studio Ghibli movies. This is also one of the movies my best friend, boyfriend, and myself marathoned the weekend she visited back at the end of June.

Unlike a lot of the other Ghibli films, where they have the more "magical journey" feel, this is a journey of life, and love, and laughter. It's just a normal journey of self-discovery—a theme that is seen often in Studio Ghibli films—but unlike the others films, the characters in this movie make the self-discovery journey fun and enjoyable. Each character has their own charm and color that adds to the story and makes their journey magical in its own way.

I love the intertwining stories of the characters in this movie. It's easy to get attached to the characters and what's happening to them because the story is so simple and relatable. These characters have so many quirks and charms and they literally just make me smile as I watch them, it's so hard to dislike this movie or anyone in this movie. Becoming attached is easy and also makes your heart go out to the characters, so when little plot twists appear you really feel for them.

As always, Studio Ghibli lives up to the animation, colors, and character design in this movie. It's all such a joy to watch and it's so beautiful. Every little detail is taken into consideration when this movie is made and because of the era this movie takes place in, along with how much attention to detail there is, everything is so unique and the art and setting itself, along with the characters, have personalities of their own. Especially the clubhouse. It's just really lovely.

The music for this movie is wonderful. It fits the year of 1963 and it's so wonderful. If you're familiar with the era, or have older parents or grandparents, you may be familiar with some of the songs that appear throughout the movie. But besides that little fact and the familiarity, the music complements the movie and era so well. You have soft, beautiful scores and then you have the jazzy feel of the 60's.

Honestly, this movie is amazing. Simply put, there's a lot of charm and personality. The main characters have an engaging story line and the supporting characters pick up the slack wherever the movie may let off or slow down. It's an enjoyable, simple watch filled with fun and loving characters. I don't really know how to put it...but this movie is just great. It's sweet, charming, and I love it and would recommend it in a split second. Studio Ghibli did amazing, Miyazaki did amazing. From Up On Poppy Hill is a must-watch for everyone, in my humble opinion.

Synopsis: Jirou dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and thus unable to become a pilot, Jirou joins the aircraft division of a major Japanese engineering company in 1927. His genius is soon recognized, and he grows to become one of the world's most accomplished airplane designers.

Key historical events deeply affected the course of Jirou's life, including the great Kanto earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic, and Japan's plunge into war. He meets and falls in love with Naoko, grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjou, and innovates tremendously, leading the aviation world into the future.

To start off with, a quick note: I normally title these reviews based upon what the work's most popular name is. For the last Ghibli movie I did, it was the Japanese title that comes up as being the most searched. For this review, the English title appears to be more popular. And, so, I will refer to this movie as The Wind Rises.

Now, on to the review portion...this movie was...well, unique to say the least. It was very fitting of Miyazaki's last movie, that's for sure. Did I love it? No. Did I hate it? Also no. Did I like it? Questionable. It wasn't terrible, nor was it amazing, in my honest opinion. It was decent. It was something I did, in the moment, enjoy watching. But it was nowhere near my favorite Studio Ghibli movie, and it also isn't something I would run to tell my friends in excitement that I watched, unlike other Ghibli movies.

Things I liked about this movie include the usual Studio Ghibli main character adventure and self discovery. Jirou has one of those, and the way this movie goes about it is very realistic and enjoyable. It's something that the viewer can connect to, despite the time period that this movie is set in. Each character is unique and likable and in The Wind Rises there is no one character like the other. The attention to detail, as is famous of any Studio Ghibli movie, is amazing. Whether it's concerning the way a character shakes his leg under a table as he works, the way a paper airplane flies, the way the real planes fly, or the way a suit crumples when sitting down—it's amazing and wonderful, and it's the magic of Studio Ghibli movies. The art and colors are beautiful and are paired wonderfully with a symphonic soundtrack throughout the film that often fits the mood very well. Attention and detail to nature, grass, clouds, and how wind reacts with the environment is amazing and can only be expected of Studio Ghibli.

Despite all that, I felt this movie was slow and dragged on for quite a long time. Despite having a very steady sequence in which the story follows, the pace at which things moved seemed very slow. The Wind Rises spends a lot of time going in and out of real life and Jirou's dream sequences, and sometimes this is a hard difference to decipher. The first time Jirou was dreaming, after the initial dream sequence at the start of the movie, I had no idea what was happening. I suppose, on that note, this just means that Studio Ghibli did an amazing job in allowing the movie to flow along and continue without abrupt dream sequences. However, I do feel that the dreams could have been...well, just slightly more abrupt in that manner due to the fact that real life often flowed into a dream state and it was hard to determine which was which until certain characters and happenings gave it away—and for me, that was often 2-3 minutes into the dream scene.

The movie's take on the time period and the historical events are amazingly done, and are beautiful. While the ending is bittersweet, it is a respectable ending and it is also an ending where you can't expect much else to happen, because how could it go any other way? Although that fact is a sad one, it is one that is easily accepted too. Overall, to me, this movie wasn't horrible but it wasn't the greatest. I liked it enough that I would watch it again, though not anytime soon.

Synopsis: Arrietty, a tiny but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper. Like all little people, Arrietty remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to "borrow" scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shou, a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty's family from the home and straight into danger.

A few weeks ago, my best friend visited for the weekend and brought a bunch of Ghibli movies with her that neither my boyfriend nor I had seen. So, we marathoned them for the weekend she was here. Before I start this review, I'd like to say that I will refer to the movie title as it's English name, and the characters by their Japanese names.

As always, Studio Ghibli lives up to their reputation with The Secret World of Arrietty. The detail of this movie is absolutely stunning, amazing, breathtaking...I can't even sum it up with words, that's how great it is. Every little detail is hand-drawn, and that has always amazed me when it comes to Studio Ghibli movies, even more so with this movie. The detail to specific elements of nature was so beautiful and magical, it felt as though you were in the world—in Arrietty's world. The raindrops, the leaves, the grass, the flowers all felt so real that it was almost as if you were Arrietty herself in a fantasy world. It was like being zapped with a shrink ray and becoming a Borrower. Appreciating the artwork and art style of Studio Ghibli movies is quite easy, even more so when you learn that everything is hand-drawn...but there's something more about this movie when you consider all that.

Like most Ghibli movies, this follows the story of the main character going on a sort of adventure, and through that adventure there is a lot of character self-discovery. There was a lot of creativity put into creating the world of Arrietty and the Borrowers, and that was something I loved so much about The Secret World of Arrietty. Things that are trivial to us, things we might throw out—those are things the Borrowers find most important, those are items they literally risk their lives to go out and get in order to sustain themselves. A needle to us is a sword to the tiny Borrowers, a sugar cube to us may only be useful in a cup of tea but it can last a Borrower a month or longer. A few days travelling trip for the Borrowers is literally a walk down the road for us. It's amazing how thought-out this world was and how much detail and thought was put into everything.

This movie, while very peaceful and a wonderful fantasy adventure with a well-thought out world and a unique idea, has moments that are both sad, fun, and will have you on the edge of your seat. Most of the characters are likable—I won't say anything more on that topic due to some spoilers I don't want to ruin—and it features a family that is easy to connect to and fall in love with, because despite their size and despite calling themselves "Borrowers" they're a perfect picture of normal and something you would see everyday, which is almost unimaginable when considering tiny people. The ending is a little bittersweet; there are things you want to happen, things that seem so perfect and even perfectly set up and things that should happen but in the end, inevitably, they don't. Considering everything, it's not much of a surprise. But it's still bittersweet in that you wish it would have turned out a certain way.

The story and the art are both beautiful. The soundtrack, too, is gorgeous. I loved the soundtrack so much I went and bought and downloaded it. It's epic and loud, it's soft and beautiful, it reminds me of Celtic music. It's a great companion to the movie.

I am so in love with The Secret World of Arrietty and I hope everyone gets to watch it someday, at some point in their life.

The Unseen World is the home of ghosts, but changes are now allowing the souls of the dead to pass over into the Apparent World, with unpredictable effects. Follow the journey of Taro, Makoto, and Masayuki, as they cross between the two worlds, trying to unravel a great mystery.

Made in 2007, it's one of those borderline anime that are trying out the new animation style, but still have the bland colors of older styles. Nonetheless, it was still good, and honestly I'm not complaining. I like that animation style. In the beginning, a lot of the camera angles of the show were pretty impressive. Those behind the production tried a fair amount to make the scenery almost lifelike...almost being the key word. It was impressive, slightly. Though with every episode progression, it felt as though the animation was getting pretty lazy (at least with the scenery aspect), and it was no longer as impressive (it was only impressive to an extent to begin with).

There's so much I could say about this anime that are spoilers, which because these spoilers are what I feel I should reveal in order to get someone interested. Basically, these three kids form a friendship through a mutual bond of having traumatic experiences that occurred in their past. They also share a mutual interest in a past event that occurred in the small town of Suiten, which is actually shown in the first episode to be Taro's (one of the main characters) traumatic experiences. He was kidnapped as a young child with his sister, and his sister died. Now he has repressed memories of the even that haunt him. The further the three main characters - Taro, Makoto, and Masayuki - explore into the kidnapping, the more they get mixed up in some supernatural occurrences, which all seemingly tie into their pasts, going on around the town which apparently is located on some sort of spirit world hot spot. Almost everything that occurs in this anime has to do with Taro's traumatic experience in some way, which serves as a premise to the entire show (and is revealed in the first episode) because everyone seems to be strangely knowledgeable on the topic.

So...I think there was character development? But I didn't notice it much. Taro, Makoto, & Masayuki were all likable throughout the entire series (though I didn't like Masayuki much at the start because he seemed like some creepy teenage stalker), and they did have some development. But for some reason I've got it in my head that there needs to be a progressive, noticeable change in the character to be considered "development"...which I know isn't the case. You do see Taro become more confident in himself through the series, and Makoto become less angry at the world. Masayuki is still slightly creepy stalker-ish. The humor in the show was limited...I know 14-16 year olds are boring but I am pretty sure most have a better sense of humor than those characters. Sometimes the show would get too heavy, so there'd be a few random friendship-buddy-buddy moments to lighten the mood - which isn't bad, it just seemed awkwardly placed.

Being that this anime is a thriller/horror/supernatural drama, there wasn't anything special about the sound effects throughout the anime. The only thing I have to say is none of the "creepy", "mysteries", or "scary" moments would have been very climatic without the stupid typical horror sounds you find in shows and movies. And the more the show progressed, the more these moments decreased - which kinda sucked because even if it was cheesy I was enjoying watching it at 2am in the dark wired on a Monster Energy drink yelling "ohhhh my god!" despite there not being any "oh my god" worthy moments I just didn't want ghostly possessions to occur and turn someone I liked evil. The opening and ending themes were both good. At least, to an extent. I'm not fond of slow songs so the ending was just "meh" to me, though I did like it when in the mood. For some reason I found myself listening to the opening for majority of the series. It was a nice song, though that's my opinion.

I enjoyed this show. Sort of. I mean, I did. I enjoyed watching it. But I didn't like the ending at all - it was a flop. Honestly, the show was very technical. It's really heavy on the psychological terms and often can become more of a test of knowledge while watching it. Most of the terms are common knowledge, however, so it's not too difficult to keep up. But it is, at times, an exercise of the brain. I won't say much on why I don't enjoy the ending, but basically as the story progressed the problem of the plot losing focus arose. The show gives you this main focus for the storyline in the beginning: Taro's kidnapping. But it wasn't long before the storyline split into three, with other problems popping up. These problems, in a way, are all connected to the kidnapping of Taro. Which was great, until I came to a realization as I got further along that the resolution wasn't going to be what I was hoping. You don't get a solid ending. You kind of get a few answers, and everything else is brushed aside...then yay, happy ending scene with all the main characters smiling!

I still recommend it, though. It was pretty unique and a curiously interesting anime.

While I'll say I recommend it to anyone willing to watch, and the manga is my all-time favorite manga, I can't say the anime is my favorite. Don't get me wrong, I loved it.

For starters, I loved the art style (for the anime and the manga - that's actually what draws me to the author, I've read more of her work) and the coloring was beautiful. The presentation of the scenes were great, too. I like newer anime simply for the fact that they're trying out new angles and such to make it more realistic. Ao Haru Ride definitely had all of that new-and-modern anime appeal. The voice actors chosen were perfect for the characters, in my opinion.

And, of course, the plot line is perfect. That's what has always drawn me to Ao Haru Ride, is the plot. It's not your typical shoujo - at least, not in my opinion. Usually most shoujo I've seen have a girl pining after a guy they can't have, or the guy helping the girl in some way and the two falling in love and having all these obstacles. Well, this starts completely differently. There's a guy and a girl, and they liked each other. Which I think is a new approach. And I love the concept of it and how they go about the relationships from there. I was disappointed that you don't get a clear view of that in the anime as you do in the manga - but, I mean, it's only the first season. I'm not sure if a second season is planned, but I would sure hope so considering where the anime ended. They introduced two important characters in the last two episodes.

Which, speaking of important characters in the last two episodes - I felt as though the producer of the show switched half way through. I don't keep up with all the anime news, so I don't know if this is true or not. But Ao Haru Ride is cheesy in it's own respect, but also very deep - aspects of it that I love and was looking forward to in the anime. The last few episodes, however, got really cheesy and it lost some of its appeal to me. I enjoy secondhand embarrassment, but only to an extent. Now talking of cheesy, I will admit there's a bit of character development in the anime, but I'm really hoping for a second season so we can see more. With all that happens in the manga, it'll be amazing to see the deeper development in the anime.

Also, the ending seemed a bit rushed.

I suppose my hopes were really high because I love the manga so much. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't completely let down. Just toward the end of the anime it seemed to be lacking. I'm still hoping for a second season, and if anyone knows if there'll be one you should tell me ^^

I definitely, 120% recommend the show, though, despite the little flaws at the end!

Synopsis: Takamiya Honoka is a regular student whose only problem seems to be that he sits next to Kagari Ayaka, the school's #1 beauty. They have never spoken to each other before and any small interaction between them immediately results in her fanclub beating him. Yet when a falling part of the school's building is about to send him to the afterlife, it's Kagari that comes to his rescue. Only... she's dressed as a witch, carrying him in her arms and floating on a broom?! Kagari tells him it is her mission to protect him and that now she can finally protect him openly rather than undercover.

I just posted this review on my tumblr. It's a review I meant to do weeks and weeks and weeks ago, as I started and finished the anime in January. However, I got busy with school. But! Here is my first anime review for my new blog! Enjoy~

So when I started this anime, everywhere I was reading it was saying it was a harem anime. I don't mind harem anime, I just have watched too much recently to want to see one again. I need a break from them. However, I can tell you - this definitely is not a harem anime. Despite there only being one main male protagonist, the entire anime isn't focused around the sexual appeal of the female characters in the show.

I liked this show mainly because the male protagonist, Takamiya, was weak, an aspect that I don't always see in too many shows. Not only hat, but what made it slightly better was the fact that Honoka seems to have had a large sum of power and was very powerful, but certain events led him to lose his memory and now he has no clue what he's doing. He doesn't remember his powers, he doesn't remember a thing. And he's being protected by a badass female fire witch named Ayaka - who has also, mysteriously enough, had her memory taken away from her. But she does remember one thing: She needs to protect Honoka.

This leads to a lot of crazy, hilarious events to take place throughout the anime. While the show plotline is meant to be serious - as Honoka losing his memory seems to be quite the serious thing, and every witch within the city wants the power within him to be awakened for their own uses - it comes off as funny and lighthearted, with a slight undertone of serious. I think that's one thing I enjoyed about it the most. It was serious. But it wasn't, at the same time.

The witches in the show are split into two groups: the Workshop Witches and the Tower Witches. One group is meant to be bad, and the other good, but there's really no solid line between the two. Neither is black and white. Every witch is a shade of gray - because their stories, histories, and goals all intermingle with each other, and the "bad" witches end up helping the "good" witches many times; and vice versa. It makes for a lot of interesting plot twists and confusion. There was always something new happening in this show.

There were times where, I think, it went overboard with the humor. As if it were trying too hard to be funny. It was just ridiculous at some points. But all the same, it was enjoyable and made me laugh. And the plotline was actually very, very intriguing. Plus it was a bit nice to see a male protagonist that was under-powered for once, and for a female character who is just plain awesome, and for the male character to grow stronger. Unfortunately, he didn't grow much stronger. Some of his powers were released in the show, and towards the end it seemed as though he was starting to get stronger and learn more....which made me sad, because it was about the last two episodes when really cool stuff concerning his power started to happen. But then the series ended! I'm really hoping for a second season of this....at some point. Because I want to learn more! There are so many unsolved mysteries.

Also, the animation was really great, in my opinion. Especially the fighting. And Ayaka's fire! Whoever put this animation together, whoever drew all this...they really did an amazing job, and props to them.

Overall, I recommend Witch Craft Works to viewers and I think it was a fun anime to watch. Also - I promise you, despite what anyone else may say - it's not a harem. Yeah there's only, like, two male characters - and yeah there are a lot of female characters (Chronoire Schwarz VI was my favorite) - but it was still a freaking awesome anime, and not a harem in any aspect.
